Who can get ADHD, anxiety, or depression care

Guidelines for ADHD, anxiety, and depression care at Circle Medical, and when you may still be eligible for primary care.

Circle Medical treats ADHD, anxiety, and depression in primary care. Some medications, substances, and psychiatric histories need a specialist instead. In many cases, we can still see you for primary care.

We care about your safety.

The short answer

Circle Medical providers are board-certified in primary care. They can treat many people with ADHD, anxiety, or depression. Some medications, substances, and psychiatric histories need a psychiatrist or other specialist.

Your provider decides during your appointment. The sections below are guidelines. Your provider uses them, along with their own judgment, to decide what level of care you need and whether that care can be safely delivered at Circle Medical.

If they can't treat your ADHD, anxiety, or depression, you may still be eligible for primary care at Circle Medical.

You also need to meet the general requirements for all patients, including being 18 or older. See Who can become a Circle Medical patient.

Medications and substances

Some medications and substances mean we can't treat ADHD, anxiety, or depression. Each section says whether you can still be seen for primary care.

Daily prescribed opioids

Opioids include drugs like Percocet and Vicodin.

If you take opioids every day, Circle Medical can't treat you for ADHD, anxiety, depression, or other mental health care until you've stopped for at least 12 months. You can likely be seen for primary care if a pain specialist handles your opioids, and you are on a stable chronic pain plan.

Circle Medical doesn't prescribe opioids or other narcotics.

Benzodiazepines and sleep medications

Benzodiazepines include alprazolam (Xanax) and lorazepam (Ativan). Sleep medications include zolpidem and Dayvigo.

If you take a benzodiazepine or sleep medication on at least half the days in a month, Circle Medical can't treat you for ADHD, anxiety, depression, or other mental health care. We can still likely see you for primary care.

If you take a benzodiazepine every day, Circle Medical can't start ADHD treatment until you've stopped for at least 3 to 4 months.

Circle Medical doesn't prescribe benzodiazepines or sleep medications.

Methadone treatment

If you're currently in a methadone treatment program, Circle Medical can't treat you for ADHD, anxiety, depression, or other mental health care.

We can still likely see you for primary care.

Tell your provider that you're in a methadone treatment program.

Kratom

If you currently use kratom, we are unable to treat you at Circle Medical.

Stimulants above the FDA-approved dose

If you already take a stimulant above the dose the FDA has approved, you likely need a psychiatrist. We can't see you for ADHD or other mental health care.

You can be seen for primary care.

A bridge prescription is a short-term stimulant prescription. We can't provide one unless you've already established care with a Circle Medical provider and completed the full ADHD intake process.

Buprenorphine (Suboxone)

If you've been stable on buprenorphine for more than a year, and a provider outside Circle Medical manages it, you may be eligible for ADHD, anxiety, or depression care or other mental health care, plus primary care.

If you've been taking it for less than a year, Circle Medical can't treat you for ADHD, anxiety, depression, or other mental health care. You can still likely be seen for primary care.

Circle Medical doesn't prescribe Suboxone.

Complex psychiatric history

Some histories need a specialist. If this applies to you, your provider will tell you during your appointment. They may also send a message to your Secure Care Inbox.

Several medications without relief

If you've tried several psychiatric medications that didn't help, we may recommend you see a psychiatrist who specializes in complex medication plans.

Certain diagnoses

If you've been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or complex PTSD (C-PTSD), or experienced mania or paranoia, you'll need care from a psychiatrist.

Substance use and alcohol use disorder

A past history of substance use or alcohol use disorder may leave you eligible for mental health care and primary care at Circle Medical. Patients are evaluated on an individual basis.

If you've been diagnosed with substance use or alcohol use disorder, you need to have stopped using for a set period before we can treat you for ADHD, anxiety, depression, or other mental health care. For opioids or illicit drugs, or alcohol, that period is at least 12 months.

Your provider may order a urine drug test for a history of substance use disorders. See Urine drug monitoring (UDM) at Circle Medical.

Circle Medical does not treat substance use disorder or alcohol use disorder.

Thoughts of suicide or self-harm

If you're having these thoughts now, go to the nearest emergency room. The note at the top of this article lists other ways to get help right away.

Psychiatric hospitalization in the last year

If you were hospitalized for a psychiatric issue in the last year, Circle Medical cannot treat you for mental health care or primary care.

If you already have an ADHD diagnosis

If another provider diagnosed you with ADHD, you still complete Circle Medical's ADHD diagnostic process before a controlled medication can be considered. See Understanding the ADHD diagnostic process at Circle Medical.

If you're not eligible

  • Your provider will explain why and recommend the type of specialist to see, such as a psychiatrist.

  • You can often keep seeing Circle Medical for other primary care. See the rules above.

  • We can send your medical records to your new provider. Our support team can help you share them.
