What to do if your medication is out of stock

Steps to take when your medication isn’t in stock at your pharmacy.

During national medication shortages, getting your prescription filled may require extra steps, and your Care Team can help you explore other options.

Common reasons for shortages

  • Manufacturing delays: If there are issues at the production facility, this can decrease the amount of medication being sent to your pharmacy.

  • Increased demand: More patients require a specific medication than the current supply can support.

Steps to take if your pharmacy is out of stock

Important note: Pharmacists use their discretion when disclosing the stock of controlled substances to patients without an active prescription.

If your preferred pharmacy is out of stock, follow these steps:

  1. Ask your pharmacist if they know when they will receive a restock. Prescription change requests often get resolved in the same amount of time it would take for your pharmacy to receive the medication.

  2. Ask about generic options. Check with your pharmacist if a generic version is available.

  3. Ask for alternative strengths. Ask if different strengths are available that can achieve your prescribed daily dose.

  4. Call nearby pharmacies. Check with other local pharmacies or large retail chains to see if they have the medication in stock.

  5. Discuss alternatives with your provider. During your video appointment, discuss alternative options with your provider.
