Lost or stolen medications

Here’s what to do if you lose or misplace your medication.

Updated this week

Losing your medication can be worrying, but we are here to help. This article explains how to request a replacement for both controlled and non-controlled substances.

Non-controlled substances

For non-controlled substances like blood pressure medications, antibiotics, antihistamines, diabetes medications, inhalers, and statins for managing cholesterol levels, we can help you request a replacement.

To request a replacement:

  1. Start a chat through the Circle Medical app or web portal.

  2. Provide the following information:

    1. Medication name

    2. When the pharmacy last filled it

    3. When it was lost or stolen

    4. Any supporting documents (such as a police report)

  3. Your Care Team will review your request and may ask clarifying questions before forwarding it to your provider.

  4. Based on your provider's clinical judgment, they may replace the prescription or ask you to book an appointment to discuss further.

Controlled substances

Controlled substances (like stimulant medications or testosterone) fall under stricter federal and state regulations. These regulations are put in place to protect public health and prevent misuse. Getting a replacement for a controlled substance medication requires an appointment with your provider.

To request a replacement for a controlled substance, please book an appointment with your provider.

Keep in mind:

  • An appointment with your provider is required to discuss the situation.

  • A replacement prescription is not guaranteed and is subject to your provider's discretion.

  • For stolen prescriptions, supporting documentation such as a police report, should also be included.

Note: If your provider sends a new prescription, your insurance determines coverage, and your pharmacist makes the final decision to fill it.

Keeping your medication safe

To help prevent loss or theft:

  • Store medications in a secure place, such as a locked cabinet or drawer.

  • Avoid leaving them in the car.

  • Do not share your medication with others.

  • If you are travelling, bring only the amount of medication needed for the duration of your trip.
