Who can prescribe your controlled substances in Florida
Florida law limits which providers can prescribe controlled substances like ADHD medications and testosterone. Gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) services are not available in this state at this time.
For ongoing controlled substance prescriptions in Florida, you must see:
A physician (MD or DO), or
A psychiatric nurse (PMHNP)
Nurse practitioners (NP-C) and physician assistants (PA-C) can still provide care for all other health concerns, but cannot prescribe most controlled substances beyond a seven-day supply.
What this means for your care
Appointments for controlled substances need to be scheduled with a physician (MD/DO) or psychiatric nurse (PMHNP). Don’t forget to ensure the physician you choose has "MD" or "DO" in their title, next to their name.
If your current provider is a nurse practitioner (NP-C) or physician assistant (PA-C), you can continue seeing them for primary care concerns unrelated to controlled substances.
If you have a scheduled appointment with a nurse practitioner (NP-C) or physician assistant (PA-C) for controlled substance management, our team may contact you to reschedule with a physician or psychiatric nurse.
Physicians (MD/DO) or psychiatric nurses (PMHNP) can prescribe both controlled and non-controlled substances for ongoing care. Physician assistants (PA-C) and Nurse Practitioners (NP-C) can help with non-controlled substance requests.
