What is a high-deductible plan?

A high-deductible plan is an insurance plan with lower premiums and higher deductibles than a traditional health plan. Participation in a high-deductible plan with a deductible of at least $1,350 for an individual or $2,700 for a family is a requirement of the IRS for health savings accounts (HSA) and other tax-advantaged programs.

If you have a high-deductible plan, you can expect to have to pay for the entire cost of the appointment with your doctor until you reach your deductible. Prices typically range between $125 and $225 per visit and you can pay using your health savings account.
